If you’re just getting to know the team sport of cricket, here are a few cricket equipment terms and general cricket terms you should know about.

The team sport of cricket is a popular summer sport that gets men, women and children excited when the cricket season starts. The sport itself is known for its rich terminology and if you’ve just started out in this prestigious sport then you may need to spend a little time getting to grips with cricket equipment names and cricket terms.

Learning and understanding these terms is extremely important if you want to start playing the game. Getting to grips with your new cricket equipment is also very important so understanding terms such as “knocking in” is essential.

A Few Terms to Help a Beginner

  • Approach – this is also known as the “run up” and describes the movement of the bowler before he bowls the ball.
  • Backlift – this is one of the most important part of learning to use your cricket equipment. This describes the lifting of the bat before you hit. Your technique can determine how well you hit the ball.
  • Breaking the Wicket – this is when the ball hits the wicket and dislodges the bails from the wicket stumps.
  • Chinese Cut – also known as “Surrey Cut” or Staffordshire Cut”, this is when an inside edge misses stumps by a few centimetres.
  • Cherry – this is used to refer to a red cricket ball, or sometimes the markets left on the ball by cricket bat contact.
  • Dead bat – when practicing with your cricket equipment, this is something that should be avoided. A dead bat happens when there isn’t enough grip on the bat so the ball loses momentum due to lack of power shortly after striking.
  • Fast Bowling – this refers to bowls which happen at extremely high speeds.
  • Grafting – this is a form of defensive batting and is usually done under difficult or failing conditions.
  • Leg Theory – a tactical style of bowling which aims balls towards the leg side. This is designed to cramp the batsman.
  • Meat of the bat – understanding how your cricket equipment works is important and the “meat of the bat” is the thickest part of it. This is where most of the energy is imparted to the ball.
  • Out – the spoken signal to dismiss the batsman.
  • Outswing – this is when a ball delivery curves away from the batsman.
  • Pad away – this is yet another technique using cricket equipment; using safety pads to hit the ball away from the wicket.
  • The Yips – a psychological effect on bowlers suffering from loss of confidence. This is evident in the bowler’s run up, release and overall ball delivery.
